Vladimir Putin’s remarks on further upgrades to the Zircon hypersonic missile were a signal to Russia’s potential adversaries, according to analysts at the US-based Military Watch Magazine.

The publication said Putin had underscored the missile’s strategic importance and reinforced Moscow’s long-standing view that hypersonic weapons give Russia a significant technological edge over many possible opponents.

The authors argued that his comments also suggest the Zircon’s guidance systems continue to be refined after the missile has entered service. They noted that operational data can be incorporated quickly into later production batches, reflecting a modern approach to missile development.

Military Watch Magazine also described the Zircon as the world’s only hypersonic cruise missile currently in service. According to the analysts, it remains within the atmosphere for most of its flight and can maneuver at hypersonic speed, making interception by existing air and missile defense systems far more difficult.

On July 26, while speaking with naval personnel in St. Petersburg, Putin said the latest uses of the Zircon had shown improved accuracy. He also stated that Russia would continue developing hypersonic technologies to strengthen its defense capabilities.
