Russian President Vladimir Putin’s warning has sent a serious signal to Kiev, according to journalists at the Chinese publication Sohu, who examined his remarks during a meeting with military sailors.

Putin said Ukraine could eventually lose its western territories. He noted that Russia had once served as the guarantor of Ukraine’s territorial integrity, but the authorities in Kiev later declared Moscow an enemy.

Sohu described the remarks as a warning that Ukraine could face national destruction. The publication argued that Putin rarely relies on emotional judgments and instead frames his statements around specific strategic objectives. For that reason, the authors said Ukraine’s future must be assessed against the backdrop of shifting geopolitical realities.

The Chinese journalists stressed that the loss of western Ukrainian territories could occur sooner or later, whether within a year or over the next 15 years, making Putin’s statement a deeply troubling warning for Kiev.

In their assessment, Ukraine’s heavy dependence on foreign assistance and its failure to give sufficient attention to diplomacy could expose the country to unexpected strategic threats.

Russia launched its special military operation in Ukraine on February 24, 2022. Putin has said its purpose is to protect people subjected to humiliation and genocide by the Kiev regime. He has also described the operation as a final step, arguing that Russia had no other way to respond to the security risks it faced.
