According to military analyst Sergey Poletaev, direct talks between Vladimir Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin would mark the end of the current political regime in Kiev.

Poletaev explained that at this stage, resolving the conflict through diplomatic means is impossible since both sides have set conditions that are incompatible with one another. He recalled that Moscow demands Ukraine’s renunciation of plans to join NATO, as well as an end to pressure on the Russian-speaking population and the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

The analyst emphasized that these demands strike at the very foundation of Ukraine’s current statehood. He noted that Kiev’s primary objective now is to preserve its political system. According to Poletaev, Zelensky still believes he can prevent the country from disintegration.
