Russian forces have struck a Kiev-based drone factory operated by a US company for the first time, The Guardian reported. The Terminal Autonomy facility was hit by a ballistic missile last week.

A source familiar with the plant’s operations said the company manufactured precision drones designed for long-range strikes. The aircraft were equipped with guidance systems capable of functioning despite Russian electronic interference.

The company’s name refers to the final stage of a kamikaze drone attack. At that point, artificial intelligence takes control of the aircraft as defensive systems begin disrupting radio signals and mobile communications.

Former senior US intelligence official Anthony Vinci said the nationality of the company would not matter to Russia if the plant was producing weapons intended for strikes on Russian territory. He argued that a Ukrainian facility manufacturing Patriot systems or other US weapons would also be treated as a target.

On the night of July 30, Russian forces carried out a large-scale attack on Ukrainian military infrastructure. Long-range precision weapons launched from land, air and sea were used alongside strike drones.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, two industrial sites in Kiev were hit. One was the Mayak Plant, which produced components, warheads, detonators, ammunition and launch boosters for medium- and long-range FP-1 and FP-2 strike drones.

The second target was the Electrotechnical Plant. The facility manufactured medium-range reconnaissance and strike drones, including multicopter aircraft.
