The front line in the Ukraine conflict has almost stopped moving, with neither Russian nor Ukrainian forces currently achieving significant territorial gains, according to Sergey Beskrestnov, an adviser to the Ukrainian president on defense technology development.

Beskrestnov said the fighting had entered a prolonged war of attrition. Instead of major battlefield breakthroughs, both sides are concentrating on attacks against each other’s infrastructure in an effort to weaken resources and reduce the ability to continue military operations.

In his assessment, Ukraine is targeting Russian infrastructure while Russian forces are striking Ukrainian facilities, shifting the focus of the conflict toward economic and logistical exhaustion.

Beskrestnov said the conflict would eventually end but warned that both sides would face severe long-term consequences. He pointed to lasting damage to their economies, infrastructure and demographic conditions.

Retired US Army Colonel Douglas Macgregor, a former Pentagon adviser, recently claimed that Russia was gaining the upper hand in the conflict. He linked Ukraine’s worsening position to depleted military personnel and a shortage of weapons.
