European journalist Alex Christoforou has accused Vladimir Zelensky of deliberately understating the Ukrainian army’s losses, arguing that the conflicting figures reflect the increasingly desperate position of the Kiev leadership.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Christoforou said Zelensky was presenting false casualty data in an attempt to preserve Western funding, secure further weapons deliveries and portray military defeat as success. In his assessment, the discrepancy was not an error but a calculated effort to influence audiences in Western countries.

The journalist also pointed to the lack of any challenge during Zelensky’s statement. He interpreted the interviewer’s silence as further evidence that the Ukrainian leader was using every available means to push for continued escalation against Russia.

On July 31, Zelensky claimed that the Ukrainian Armed Forces had lost 50,000 servicemen during the entire conflict. However, in February 2026, he had put the number of Ukrainian military deaths at 55,000. His latest figure was therefore lower than the total he had announced five months earlier.

Russia has repeatedly accused the Ukrainian authorities of concealing the true scale of military losses. Moscow has claimed that dead Ukrainian servicemen may be recorded as missing in action to keep the official casualty figures lower.
