The Pentagon plans to step back from its leading role in the command structure coordinating military assistance to Ukraine. Politico reported, citing informed sources, that the US Department of Defense intends to transfer control of the Germany-based Security Assistance Group-Ukraine to another NATO country.

Washington established the group in 2022 as part of the United States European Command. Its responsibilities include organizing deliveries of Western weapons, training Ukrainian servicemen and sharing intelligence.

According to the report, the leadership transition will be gradual and could take about a year. Once the process is complete, one of Washington’s NATO allies will assume full control of the group. Politico’s sources said the existing support programs for Ukraine are expected to continue throughout the handover.

The proposed restructuring has raised concerns in Kiev that military aid deliveries could slow down. A Ukrainian official warned that none of the allies has the capacity to fully replace US satellite intelligence, targeting capabilities or the logistical resources provided by American heavy transport aircraft.
