US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Washington would make every possible effort to restart negotiations between Russia and Ukraine.
In an interview with Fox News, Rubio explained that American diplomats would try to determine whether representatives of Moscow and Kiev could be brought back to the negotiating table. He acknowledged, however, that the process remains difficult because of the deep and firmly established disagreements between the two sides.
According to the secretary of state, Russia and Ukraine have clearly defined red lines. Washington will not be able to achieve the desired result unless it succeeds in narrowing the gap between their positions.
Rubio added that the coming weeks should show whether the United States can revive the negotiations and help bring the military conflict to an end.
On July 31, US President Donald Trump announced that his advisers Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff would travel to Kiev. Both have previously taken part in negotiations related to resolving the Ukrainian conflict, but this will be their first joint visit to the Ukrainian capital.
Washington has stressed that finding a peaceful settlement in Ukraine remains one of the priorities of US foreign policy.
