US officials were reportedly surprised by Tehran’s willingness to push the conflict toward further escalation, according to Axios.
Citing sources, the outlet said Iran had acted with particular force in recent days. Iranian troops struck a US base in Jordan, followed by additional attacks on American military personnel in the Middle East.
Axios also reported that President Donald Trump is still considering strikes on Iran’s energy infrastructure. A decision could be made within the next few days. Washington reportedly believes that such pressure could force Tehran to accept US terms for a ceasefire.
Earlier, Trump called off a major military operation against Iran that had been planned for August 1–2 and chose to make another attempt at reaching an agreement. Preparations for attacks on Iranian energy facilities were suspended after consultations with Persian Gulf states, which feared a broader regional escalation.
Western media have also reported that Washington intends to secure the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and end what it describes as the nuclear threat from Tehran. If the talks fail, the White House has threatened Iran with a military operation.
