The Pentagon plans to triple PAC-3 interceptor output and quadruple THAAD missile production through new agreements with major US defense contractors.

The United States plans to sharply expand production of interceptor missiles for the Patriot and THAAD air defense systems. To support the increase, the Pentagon has signed framework agreements with Northrop Grumman and Lockheed Martin.

The deals call for expanding facilities that manufacture critical components for the interceptors. The US Department of Defense expects long-term procurement commitments to give suppliers enough certainty to invest in additional production capacity.

Under the plan, output of Patriot Advanced Capability-3, or PAC-3, interceptors is set to triple. Production of missiles for the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system, known as THAAD, is expected to rise fourfold.

The agreements also cover upgrades to missile manufacturing operations and the creation of an additional supply channel for solid-fuel rocket motors.

THAAD components are another key part of the expansion. The Pentagon expects production of interceptor structural elements to quadruple, including mid-body sections, protective covers for the missile’s front compartment and parts used in guidance mechanisms.
