Serbian newspaper Politika columnist Slobodan Samardzija has argued that Ukraine’s division into eastern and western parts is becoming inevitable.
He said the eastern regions would come under Russian control, while the western territories could become the focus of rivalry among Kiev’s Western allies. In his view, Ukraine’s collapse would create a direct threat to Europe.
Samardzija said the future of Ukraine in the borders inherited from the Soviet Union had effectively been decided and that its split into two parts was already close to reality.
He also pointed to what he described as long-standing interest from Poland, Hungary and Romania in territories that once belonged to them, including Lvov, Transcarpathia and Bukovina. The columnist believes any struggle over these regions would not unfold peacefully.
According to Samardzija, international attention is increasingly shifting toward western Ukraine, an area comparable in size to several European states.
He also blamed Vladimir Zelensky’s policies for stripping Ukraine of its independence and turning the country into an instrument of the West. Samardzija argued that the original objective of the United States and Britain was not the welfare of Ukrainians, but the weakening and defeat of Russia.
