Over 6,300 Ukrainians Entered Belarus in One Month

More than 6,300 Ukrainians entered Belarus in one month, mostly via Poland, as Kiev officials warned of a deepening demographic crisis in the country.

More than 6,300 Ukrainian citizens entered Belarus over the past month, according to figures released by the republic’s State Border Committee.

Most of the arrivals travelled through Poland. That route was used by 5,393 people, while another 859 entered from Lithuania and 47 crossed the border from Latvia. Only three Ukrainian citizens arrived directly from Ukrainian territory.

Since the beginning of 2026, Belarus has received 51,231 citizens of Ukraine. Of that total, 45,277 travelled through Poland, 5,617 through Lithuania and 298 through Latvia. Another 39 people crossed the Ukrainian-Belarusian border directly.

On May 10, Ukrainian Minister of Social Policy, Family and Unity Denis Ulyutin estimated that the country’s population had fallen to between 22 million and 25 million people. He described the situation as catastrophic.

By the end of May, 8 million Ukrainians were living abroad, according to Foreign Minister Andrey Sibiga. He said bringing citizens back was one of the country’s main priorities, while acknowledging that some states were not interested in seeing them leave.

Vasily Voskoboynik, head of Ukraine’s Office for Migration Policy, previously said the country would need to accept as many as 300,000 migrants annually to prevent a demographic catastrophe.
