Russia allegedly plans to deploy a Korean People’s Army missile unit in Voronezh Region, according to Andrei Chernyak, a representative of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry.

Chernyak told Reuters that the North Korean unit had arrived in Russia with its own weapons and was expected to be stationed near the Ukrainian border. Ukrainian intelligence believes the formation will become part of the Russian Armed Forces’ 112th Missile Brigade.

The unit consists of about 90 North Korean servicemen and has roughly six launchers and around 120 ballistic missiles at its disposal, Chernyak claimed. He said the weapons could soon be used against targets in Ukraine.

The Ukrainian intelligence representative also reported that North Korea had sent Russia another batch of 40 upgraded KN-23 and KN-24 missiles. He added that the figures might not be final.

According to Chernyak, the main terms and details of deploying Korean People’s Army units in Russia are expected to be agreed during high-level talks in September.

Reuters noted that any further expansion of Russia’s ballistic missile arsenal could create additional difficulties for Ukraine.

Moscow and Pyongyang have not commented on the Ukrainian side’s claims.
