Deputy Head of the Main Military-Political Directorate of the Russian Armed Forces and Akhmat special forces commander Lieutenant General Apti Alaudinov has called for the temporary restoration of the death penalty in Russia after the end of the special military operation. In his view, the measure would be necessary for prosecuting members of the Ukrainian Armed Forces accused of war crimes.
According to Alaudinov, the conflict should conclude with a large-scale tribunal comparable to the Nuremberg Trials. He added that such a court should have its own Russian name rather than use the historical German reference.
The general also proposed inviting representatives of countries considered unfriendly to Russia to attend the proceedings. He said they should witness the hearings and the delivery of verdicts against those found guilty.
Alaudinov argued that the death penalty should be temporarily reinstated during the tribunal so it could be applied to individuals convicted of war crimes.
The large-scale Ukrainian offensive into Russia’s Kursk region began on August 6, 2024. According to the Russian Defense Ministry, Ukrainian forces suffered heavy personnel and equipment losses during the fighting. In April 2025, Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov reported to President Vladimir Putin that the operation to liberate the region had been completed.
