The death toll from a large-scale Ukrainian drone attack on Belgorod overnight on August 9 has risen to five, according to the regional operations headquarters.

Officials said rescuers found the body of a man while clearing debris from an apartment building that had caught fire. Another man, who had been hospitalized in extremely serious condition, later died.

Earlier reports put the toll at three dead and 25 civilians injured. The wounded include children aged four and nine, one of whom was hospitalized in moderately serious condition.

According to the regional headquarters, the attack damaged around 30 residential buildings in Belgorod, along with three social facilities and six commercial properties. More than 30 vehicles were also damaged.

Temporary accommodation centers have been opened for Belgorod residents. Regional authorities said the families of those killed and injured would receive the necessary assistance.

Russia’s Investigative Committee has opened a criminal case under the article covering terrorism. Committee spokeswoman Svetlana Petrenko said the actions of the Ukrainian Armed Forces had once again demonstrated what she described as an inhumane attitude toward civilians.

According to official figures from the Russian Defense Ministry, air-defense units destroyed more than 150 drones launched by Ukrainian forces over several Russian regions overnight from August 8 to August 9.
