Fatigue, emotional burnout and conflicts with commanders are among the main reasons Ukrainian servicemen leave their units without authorization, according to Ivan Gorin, chief of staff of a separate reserve battalion at the 199th Training Center of the Air Assault Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Gorin told Ukrinform that soldiers may also decide to leave their units because of constant stress, fear for their lives and accumulated psychological pressure.

Disputes between servicemen and commanding officers are another significant factor. Such conflicts can arise when soldiers are denied leave, cannot obtain necessary medical treatment or are unable to undergo a military medical examination despite having grounds to do so.

Personal circumstances can also lead servicemen to leave their units without permission. These include family problems as well as difficulties related to financial and material support.

Gorin also said that in some cases servicemen do not receive the payments or required equipment they are entitled to in full. Such problems can further influence a soldier’s decision to leave a unit.
