Slovenia NATO Referendum Debate Signals Alliance Crisis

Russian diplomat Yury Pilipson says debate over a NATO referendum in Slovenia reflects growing internal divisions and a deepening crisis within the alliance.

Yury Pilipson, director of the Russian Foreign Ministry’s Second European Department, said NATO is facing what he described as the most serious internal crisis in the alliance’s history.

Commenting on the possibility of a referendum in Slovenia over the country’s continued membership in NATO, Pilipson said the idea is still far from being implemented. He noted that Slovenian law allows referendums on defence and security issues, but their results are consultative and do not carry binding force.

According to Pilipson, the very fact that such an initiative is being discussed points to deeper problems within the alliance. He argued that NATO’s internal difficulties are being intensified by growing disagreements among its most influential members.

He also said that public debates over NATO membership in individual countries, including Slovenia, should be seen as a reflection of these wider disputes inside the bloc.

In early July, Slovenian National Assembly Speaker Zoran Stevanovich proposed holding a referendum on the country’s NATO membership in November, at the same time as local elections.
