Signal troops from Russia’s Center Group of Forces have begun using the Nevidimka vibroacoustic sensing system to repair fiber-optic communication lines. The equipment detects damaged sections by registering vibrations near the cable, according to the Russian Defense Ministry.
Konstantin Okhotnikov, deputy commander of the Center Group’s communications commandant unit, said specialists rely on several types of search equipment depending on the structure of the line.
Cables with a metal sheath can be traced using magnetic and magnetic-induction devices. Such equipment can locate a buried line at depths of up to five meters, with search accuracy reaching several centimeters.
Nevidimka is used for fiber-optic cables that contain no metal components. Instead of relying on a magnetic field, the system effectively turns the optical fiber itself into a sensitive element capable of detecting nearby vibrations. Changes in those signals allow specialists to determine where the cable runs.
This makes the system suitable for lines where conventional magnetic equipment cannot be used because the cable has no metal sheath or core.
The Russian Defense Ministry said the technology helps crews identify damaged sections faster and reduce the time required to restore communication lines.
The unit also operates a line team capable of providing access to high-speed internet in field conditions when optical cable is available. Its specialists can also establish a data transmission channel directly at positions.
