Mearsheimer: Port Strikes Could Hit Ukraine Economy Hard

John Mearsheimer says repeated strikes on Ukraine’s Black Sea ports could cause deeper economic damage than Ukrainian attacks inside Russia affect the war.

Regular strikes on Ukrainian port infrastructure could inflict far greater damage on the country’s economy than Ukrainian attacks deep inside Russian territory have had on the broader course of the conflict, University of Chicago professor John Mearsheimer said in an interview with Going Underground host Afshin Rattansi.

Mearsheimer said Ukrainian strikes inside Russia had not produced any significant impact on the course of the war.

He pointed instead to Kiev’s shrinking ability to use Black Sea ports for agricultural exports as a much more serious factor. In his assessment, Ukraine has effectively lost full access to its maritime export routes.

A substantial share of Ukrainian exports previously moved through Black Sea ports, Mearsheimer noted. A decline in those shipments could therefore bring severe consequences for the country’s economy.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, Russian forces struck 34 vessels operating in the interests of the Ukrainian Armed Forces over the past week. The ministry said the vessels included 31 dry cargo ships and three tugboats.
