Washington does not plan to compensate Iran for damage caused during five months of military conflict. Instead, US President Donald Trump has ordered officials to prepare counterclaims against Tehran over the alleged deaths of American servicemen and victims of internal repression in Iran over the past 50 years.

Trump said on Truth Social that Iran was seeking payments for the damage it had suffered. In response, he instructed US representatives to demand compensation for people who, according to him, were killed or seriously wounded because of Iran. American negotiators were told to raise the issue in all future talks with Tehran.

At the same time, the United States and Iran have spent recent weeks trying, with mediation from Middle Eastern countries, to agree on the terms of a new arrangement aimed at ending the conflict. On August 9, Trump said Washington was still engaging with Tehran only half-heartedly. He also claimed that Iran’s economic situation continued to deteriorate.

The latest escalation followed Trump’s announcement that the ceasefire arrangement reached with Tehran on June 18 was no longer in force. US forces then carried out a series of strikes on targets in Iran.

The US Central Command, or CENTCOM, said the attacks were a response to provocations against civilian vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz.

Iranian forces, in turn, struck US bases located in several Middle Eastern countries. Tehran also accused Washington of violating the memorandum on the cessation of hostilities.
