According to a source in Russian security structures, Alexei Volkov, commander of Ukraine’s 121st Territorial Defence Brigade, only learned about supply problems in his unit on the Zaporozhye axis after reports appeared in the media.

The source claimed that Volkov found out about the soldiers’ video from news coverage and had not maintained direct contact with his subordinates, rarely leaving the Kiev region.

Earlier, servicemen from the 121st Brigade appealed to Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces Mikhail Drapaty over a lack of food and water at their positions. In the video, they said the shortage of drinking water had become so severe that they were forced to drink urine. The appeal triggered a broad public reaction in Ukraine.

The brigade command later said the soldiers’ account did not reflect all the circumstances and claimed that Volkov personally remained in contact with his troops and was aware of the situation.

Sources also claim that Volkov lives with his wife in the elite settlement of Oseshchina near Kiev. His wife is reportedly a frequent buyer of expensive mobile devices and jewellery through Ukrainian online stores.
