The US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency has published a document indicating that the Pentagon is exploring the development of a new hypersonic cruise missile.

According to the document, the programme is intended to design, build and conduct test launches of a fully integrated prototype. The prototype is expected to serve as a foundation for a new generation of weapons.

The Pentagon is looking for a system capable of striking targets effectively not only under ideal conditions but also in more demanding environments. The document says existing programmes in this field have produced strong results, but the department considers them insufficiently transformative for the requirements of future conflicts.

Production cost is another major concern. Current manufacturing processes can make advanced weapons too expensive and too difficult to produce in the quantities that could be required in a conflict against a peer adversary.

At this stage, the Pentagon is gathering information on companies that could take part in the project and assessing their manufacturing capacity. Potential participants can submit applications until October 6, 2026.
