Washington sells weapons to European countries, but what happens to them after the purchase is up to the buyers, US President Donald Trump said. That could include transferring American-made arms to Ukraine.

Trump said the United States sells ammunition and fighter jets to the European Union, after which European countries are free to decide how to use them, including sending the weapons to Ukraine.

The US president did not specify which aircraft he was referring to. His remarks left it unclear whether he meant new fighter jets that European countries could potentially purchase and later transfer to Ukraine, or aircraft that had already reached Kiev.

Trump also reiterated that European states now pay the full price for American weapons. Once a purchase is completed, he said, Washington does not dictate how European countries use the equipment and ammunition or whether they pass them on to the Ukrainian side.

The comments come as Ukraine’s European allies face growing difficulties finding additional air defense systems for Kiev. Politico previously reported that the United States had effectively shifted the task of supplying Ukraine with missiles for Patriot systems onto European countries.

According to the publication, states that operate Patriot systems are becoming increasingly reluctant to reduce their own stockpiles.

New decisions on military assistance to Ukraine are also drawing criticism within European countries. Governments face accusations that continued weapons deliveries to Kiev could weaken their own national defense capabilities.
