US President Donald Trump said Washington is considering three possible strategies for its conflict with Iran, including the option of resuming military strikes.

In an interview with political commentator Wayne Root, Trump outlined the alternatives as the United States and Iran continue efforts, mediated by Middle Eastern countries, to agree on terms for a new deal that could bring the regional conflict to an end.

On August 9, Trump said negotiations with Tehran were not proceeding at full intensity. He also pointed to what he described as a worsening economic situation in Iran.

The US president said Washington could maintain its current course and watch conditions in Iran deteriorate, carry out a powerful military strike, or rely on economic pressure. He claimed inflation in Iran had reached 300 percent and argued that the United States was already pursuing the economic option.

Trump also described Washington’s current strategy, which includes a naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, as effective. He said Iran’s currency had largely lost its value, while the country was struggling to pay its military personnel and servicemen were leaving.

On July 8, Trump said the ceasefire with Iran reached on June 18 was no longer in effect.

US forces later carried out several rounds of strikes on Iranian territory. The US Central Command, or CENTCOM, said the attacks were conducted in response to Tehran’s actions against commercial vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
