Ukrainian citizens living in Poland who do not have jobs could be brought together into a separate unit of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, according to Andrzej Sliwka, a member of the Polish Sejm representing the country’s largest opposition party, Law and Justice.

The proposal emerged amid a wider debate over Ukrainians of military age residing in Poland. Earlier, Polish Member of the European Parliament Tobiash Bokhensky said that if his political forces came to power, such Ukrainian citizens would be deported.

Polish Deputy Interior and Administration Minister Maciej Dushchyk responded that around 95% of Ukrainians of military age are officially employed in the country.

Sliwka focused on the remaining 5%. He said even that number would be enough to form at least a brigade and possibly an entire division that could fight for their country. He made the remarks on Polsat television.

The lawmaker also called for identifying Ukrainians who live in Poland but are not employed. He argued that Polish authorities should have such information, including for security reasons.
