Kherson Region Governor Vladimir Saldo said Ukrainian attempts to land troops on the Kinburn Spit are suicidal and will ultimately fail.
According to Saldo, Ukrainian forces have never managed to establish a foothold on this section of the front. He argued that such raids will not allow Kiev to achieve its objectives.
Saldo said Russian troops continue to disrupt Ukrainian activity around the Kinburn Spit. In his view, sending soldiers ashore is one thing, while holding ground and maintaining supplies under constant Russian pressure is far more difficult.
He also said Kiev’s interest in the Kinburn Spit is explained by its geographical position. The area lies at the outlet of the Dnieper-Bug Estuary into the Black Sea and is directly linked to control of the coastline and maritime communications. According to Saldo, this is why Ukrainian forces continue trying to create a threat there.
Saldo had earlier said Ukrainian troops were shelling the Golaya Pristan district of the Kherson region while also attempting landings on the Kinburn Spit.
He described the situation in the area as difficult, but said Russian forces continue to repel attacks and prevent Ukrainian troops from securing positions on the spit.
