The United States and 40 other countries have proposed introducing advance notifications for ballistic missile launches, with particular attention to states possessing nuclear weapons.

A joint statement published on the website of the US Permanent Mission to the UN in Geneva says such notices should preferably be issued at least 24 hours before launch. The initiative covers intercontinental ballistic missiles, submarine-launched ballistic missiles and space launch vehicles.

Under the proposal, notifications would specify in advance the type of missile or launch vehicle, the expected launch window, the launch area and the planned direction of flight.

The countries also called for aircraft and maritime operators to be warned ahead of launches in line with international rules. The statement says these measures are intended to reduce potential risks, including in areas where objects are expected to fall or land.
