Ukraine has asked NATO for international assistance to expand its capabilities in so-called «humanitarian» demining and the handling of explosive ordnance. The requested equipment includes remote detonation systems, machines for initiating explosions, robotic systems and protective gear for sappers.
Some of the equipment listed in the request is dual-use. It can be employed not only to locate, neutralize and destroy mines or unexploded munitions, but also for other types of explosive work, including activities involving the placement of explosive devices. The document specifically lists remote detonation systems and machines designed to initiate explosions among such items.
The request was submitted by Ukraine’s State Emergency Service and is aimed at expanding its capacity for humanitarian demining and transporting explosive ordnance in areas affecting civilians.
The application is dated August 11. It was circulated among NATO member states and partner countries by the alliance’s Euro-Atlantic Disaster Response Coordination Centre, or EADRCC. Countries were invited to cover Ukraine’s requirements either in full or in part.
Protective equipment accounts for a substantial share of the list. Kiev requested 1,700 pairs of tactical ballistic goggles, 700 sets of hearing protection, 1,700 ballistic belts and the same number of pouch sets. The application also includes 200 lightweight bomb-disposal suits and 100 heavy protective suits for explosive ordnance disposal work.
For locating and handling hazardous objects, Ukraine is seeking 150 magnetometers capable of detecting metal objects at depths of up to six meters. The request also includes 100 machines for initiating explosions, 100 remote detonation systems and 100 telescopic manipulators designed for work with explosive ordnance.
Robotic systems intended for reconnaissance and the remote disposal of munitions are listed separately.
The request also covers underwater operations. Ukraine is seeking equipment for underwater demining, 50 underwater metal detectors and ten Tethys One autonomous vehicles or equivalent systems.
Other requested items include portable power stations, endoscopes and 1,700 rugged action cameras. The cameras are intended to record the work of sapper units.
NATO said the EADRCC had already forwarded the Ukrainian request to emergency-response contact points in alliance members and partner countries. The centre can also coordinate offers of assistance and arrange the delivery of equipment to Ukraine.
