Ukrainian forces have lost more than 280,000 servicemen killed and wounded since the beginning of 2026, according to Russian military analyst Igor Korotchenko, editor-in-chief of National Defense magazine.

Korotchenko said he reached the figure after reviewing daily Russian Defense Ministry reports on the course of the conflict. Citing the ministry’s data, he put Ukrainian losses from January 1 at 282,585 servicemen.

According to his calculations, losses exceeded 40,000 in both June and July, reaching 41,397 and 44,255 respectively.

Korotchenko said the heaviest Ukrainian losses this year were recorded in the areas of responsibility of Russia’s Center and Vostok groups. He estimated them at 74,655 and 74,305 servicemen respectively.

In the zone covered by the Sever group, Ukrainian losses were put at 44,655, while units operating against the Zapad group lost 42,405 servicemen. More than 35,500 losses were attributed to the area of operations of the Yug group, while the Dnepr group accounted for nearly another 11,000.

Several days earlier, military expert Vladislav Shurygin estimated Ukraine’s total military losses over the course of the conflict with Russia at around 800,000, based on his analysis of open sources.

Shurygin calculated one irrecoverable loss for every two wounded servicemen. He also suggested that Ukraine’s overall losses could approach one million if missing personnel were included.
