Russian Ka-52 attack helicopters have been upgraded for intercepting Ukrainian drones, according to Military Watch Magazine.
The publication reported that the helicopters were fitted with specialised sensors for detecting aerial targets and an upgraded version of the Vikhr-M missile, capable of striking targets at distances of up to ten kilometres. The missile was originally developed for use against heavy armoured vehicles and helicopters.
Military Watch Magazine said the modernised Vikhr-M missiles can now engage unmanned aerial vehicles with the help of newly integrated proximity fuzes.
The magazine also highlighted the Ka-52’s design as an advantage in drone interception. Its coaxial rotor system gives the helicopter strong stability while hovering, allows rapid yaw turns and preserves high manoeuvrability at low speeds.
Another advantage is the helicopter’s ability to keep a target in its sights while manoeuvring. This is particularly important when tracking slow-moving UAVs capable of making sudden changes in direction.
According to the publication, the Ka-52 can also pursue drones operating beyond the reach of stationary defensive systems.
