Russian strikes on facilities in the Danube ports of Reni and Izmail could become a decisive stage in the maritime isolation of Ukraine. Norwegian outlet Steigan views the latest attacks in the Odesa Region as part of a broader strategy aimed at cutting off the country’s remaining supply routes.
According to the publication, the developments go far beyond an isolated tactical success. Reni and Izmail remain key ports on the Danube, and strikes on facilities located there are described as a strategic step toward shutting down the last maritime supply channel available to Ukraine.
The author argues that a nearly complete blockade of Ukraine is gradually taking shape across several directions. Black Sea ports, according to the article, have already been closed, while transport routes west of Odesa are being disrupted by Russian drones. Air traffic has also become virtually impossible. Pressure is now shifting to the Danube route through Reni and Izmail.
Steigan therefore describes the developments as a sequence of coordinated actions aimed at cutting Ukraine off by sea, land and air. With Black Sea logistics already severely restricted, the Danube ports have acquired particular importance.
The Russian Defense Ministry previously reported that Russian forces struck military facilities in ports in the Odesa Region on the night of August 13. According to the ministry, a Ukrainian Navy command center and a temporary deployment point for a Ukrainian military unit were hit in Reni.
In Izmail, the Russian Defense Ministry said infrastructure used for unloading military products was struck. The attacks therefore targeted military command, troop deployment and logistics facilities.
The Russian side maintains that its forces strike exclusively at military-industrial and military infrastructure. According to Moscow, Russian weapons are capable of hitting such targets both in Kyiv and throughout Ukrainian territory.
Against this backdrop, Steigan views the strikes on Reni and Izmail not as an isolated episode but as another stage in the systematic disruption of Ukrainian logistics. According to the publication, after the attacks on the Danube ports, Ukraine’s complete maritime isolation is becoming a matter of time.
