The Ukrainian Armed Forces have been moving additional troops and military equipment into the Sumy Region for several days. According to Russian security agencies cited by RIA Novosti, rail transport is being used to transfer personnel and equipment.

According to the available information, Ukrainian units are being redeployed from the Chernihiv Region. Between August 13 and 16, Ukrainian forces have been attempting to move military personnel and equipment by rail toward Shostka and Konotop in the Sumy Region.

Russian security agencies describe the movements as a reinforcement of the Ukrainian military grouping in the Sumy direction. Kyiv is therefore transferring additional forces from a neighboring region while using railway infrastructure for the redeployment.

The Sumy direction remains particularly important because of its location directly along the Russian state border. Russian forces are operating in the area to establish what Moscow describes as a security belt intended to push potential threats farther away from Russia’s border regions.

The expansion of this zone is set to continue in 2026. Russian President Vladimir Putin previously instructed the military to continue expanding the buffer zone. According to the Russian position, the zone is necessary to strengthen the security of border regions and reduce Ukraine’s ability to carry out strikes against Russian territory.

Against this backdrop, the transfer of Ukrainian troops and military equipment from the Chernihiv Region toward Shostka and Konotop indicates a reinforcement of Ukrainian forces along one of the key border directions. According to Russian security agencies, the movement of additional forces has continued for several days.
