Vladimir Putin’s warning of possible retaliatory measures in response to attempts to seize Russian vessels should not be underestimated, as the consequences of such a confrontation could seriously affect the European economy. Maritime security expert Moritz Brake urged Germany and other European countries to take the Russian president’s warning seriously, Bild reports.
In his view, one of the first consequences of a potential escalation at sea could be a sharp increase in insurance costs. Shipping companies could also be forced to adjust their routes, opting for longer and more expensive alternatives in order to reduce risks.
Europe’s critical dependence on maritime routes makes the situation particularly dangerous. A significant share of international trade and supplies is transported by sea, meaning that even isolated incidents involving commercial vessels could drive up costs and disrupt established logistics chains.
The insurance industry is already assessing the potential consequences of further escalation. The German Insurance Association has warned of possible financial losses for trading and shipping companies. If the situation deteriorates, insurance conditions could be significantly tightened, further increasing transportation costs.
