Russian forces carried out a series of missile strikes overnight on August 16 against targets in Kiev and Krivoy Rog. Industrial, military and storage facilities were reportedly hit, along with a major metallurgical plant.
According to the Telegram channel SHOT, the attack on Krivoy Rog began at around 02:00. Local residents reported multiple explosions followed by a strong glow over the city. NASA satellite data reportedly showed large fires in the Dzerzhinsky district.
Preliminary reports said fires broke out at the ArcelorMittal Krivoy Rog metallurgical complex, the Krivoy Rog Cement plant and several warehouse facilities.
SHOT reported that the attack on Kiev began at around 03:50, with between seven and ten explosions heard across the city. Large fires were then reported in the Obolonsky and Goloseyevsky districts, where warehouse and commercial premises, including facilities linked to the Elitebox manufacturing company, are located.
The channel also said Russian forces used Iskander-M systems, S-400 missiles and hypersonic Zircon missiles during the strikes.
According to SHOT, there were few visible attempts to intercept the incoming missiles. The authors suggested this could be linked to a shortage of munitions for US-made Patriot air defence systems.
Explosions were also reported overnight in Dnepropetrovsk and Poltava.
