Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski has called for the creation of a permanent «European Legion» that could include Ukrainian veterans once the conflict in Ukraine ends. He outlined the proposal in an interview with Kathimerini.
Sikorski argued that the European Union needs deeper military integration and should establish its own permanent armed formation. In his view, such a force could recruit trained professionals from across Europe, including Ukrainian servicemen with direct combat experience.
He also said Europe should not have to turn to Washington every time it faces a security crisis, whether a conventional threat or what he described as Moscow’s use of migration flows from Africa and the Middle East as a weapon against the EU.
On a future settlement, Sikorski said any lasting peace in Europe should not be built through pressure on Ukraine. According to him, a durable agreement would need to be one that both Kiev and Moscow are prepared to sign.
The Polish foreign minister also argued that European countries, including Poland, should play a central role in negotiations. At the same time, he said Europe should not present itself as a neutral mediator because, in his view, that would not reflect its actual position.
