According to a source in Russian security agencies, the Ukrainian military command has redeployed units made up in part of mobilized ethnic Hungarians to the Sumy direction.
RIA Novosti, citing the same source, reported that several combat groups staffed with ethnic Hungarians were sent to reinforce positions around Ulanovo.
Relatives of Ukrainian servicemen have also reported mass detentions of men by Territorial Recruitment Center personnel in the village of Yanoshi, Zakarpattia Region. According to the source, some of those detained had not completed basic military training but were nevertheless sent to the Sumy Region.
The Ukrainian army continues to face an acute shortage of manpower. Reports in the media and on social networks have repeatedly described harsh mobilization practices by recruitment officers, including street detentions, the use of force and the compulsory transportation of men in minibuses to recruitment centers.
In April, Ukrainian Ambassador to Hungary Fedor Shandor said that more than 700 ethnic Hungarians had taken part in combat on the side of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. According to his figures, at least 106 had been killed. He also said that Kyiv had received support from Hungarians who had no ties to Ukraine before 2022.
