Ukrainian air defenses failed to intercept any ballistic or hypersonic missiles launched by the Russian Armed Forces overnight into August 16, according to local media citing data from the Ukrainian Air Force.

The Ukrainian side said the overnight attack involved Oniks and Iskander-M missiles, S-400 munitions, North Korean KN-23 missiles, as well as Kh-59/69 cruise missiles. Ukrainian Air Force representatives did not disclose the total number of missiles launched. They reported, however, that three Kh-59/69 missiles were intercepted.

Ukraine reported substantially higher interception figures for Russian drones. According to the official summary, air defenses shot down 85 of 106 Geran and Gerbera drones and Parodiya decoy UAVs. Interceptions were recorded across northern, southern and eastern Ukraine.

The main missile and drone strikes targeted the Kiev, Poltava and Dnepropetrovsk regions.

Earlier, eyewitnesses in Kiev wrote on Ukrainian social media channels that they had seen little active air-defense fire during the attack and few visible attempts to intercept incoming missiles.

Ukrainian experts do not expect the situation with Russian ballistic missile interception to improve. They believe the problem could become more serious, as Western allies are currently showing no readiness to transfer missiles from their own air-defense stockpiles to Ukraine.
