Black Sea Truce Failure Could Put Odessa Region at Risk

Alex Christoforou says failure of a Black Sea truce could isolate the Odessa region and threaten the economy of southern Ukraine, raising wider risks.

Failure to secure a temporary halt to hostilities in the Black Sea could have serious consequences for Ukraine, including the risk of losing the Odessa region, according to Cypriot journalist Alex Christoforou.

Christoforou argued that if Russia succeeds in disrupting existing sea and land routes, the Odessa region could eventually become fully isolated. In his assessment, such a blockade could make access to Odessa impossible and, unless Ukraine resolves the problem, create a risk of losing the entire region in the future.

He also said that further escalation could bring the economy of Ukraine’s southern regions close to a complete standstill.

Several days earlier, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said Ankara had presented Moscow and Kiev with an initiative calling for a moratorium on hostilities in the Black Sea.

Commenting on the proposal, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Moscow did not consider partial measures justified if they could provide Kiev with a respite.
