China’s Beijing Ribri Technology has unveiled a counter-drone system that can detect and track unmanned aircraft without using radar. Instead, the complex relies on acoustic sensors, cameras and artificial intelligence, according to company materials.
The system first listens for the sound of an approaching drone. Its acoustic module analyzes surrounding noise and isolates signals characteristic of UAV engines, while artificial intelligence filters out interference from wind, birds, road traffic and other background sounds.
Once a target has been detected, optical sensors take over. The cameras operate in both the visible and infrared spectrum, allowing the system to identify the type of drone, determine its coordinates and continue tracking it.
The collected data is then passed to electronic warfare or kinetic countermeasures tasked with intercepting or destroying the detected aircraft.
The complex weighs 6.4 kilograms. Its acoustic module contains 48 microphones, while a separate camera unit is designed for round-the-clock operation in both optical and infrared modes.
Beijing Ribri Technology highlights the absence of radar as one of the system’s key features. Because the complex does not rely on radar emissions, it cannot be suppressed by electronic warfare systems designed specifically to interfere with radar equipment.
The system is intended to detect multiple classes of unmanned aircraft, ranging from larger drones such as Geran-type UAVs to small FPV drones. Its cameras can monitor targets at distances of up to four kilometers and, according to the developer, remain operational around the clock and in all weather conditions.
The technology is designed to protect both military and civilian facilities on the ground. The company also sees maritime use as another potential application, including the protection of naval vessels and civilian ships.
