Iran has considered striking US military facilities in Europe if President Donald Trump moves to escalate the conflict, Financial Times reported, citing two sources close to Tehran.

According to the sources, Iranian officials have examined scenarios involving attacks on American facilities in Southeastern Europe. Bulgaria was among the locations discussed, as the United States uses Bezmer Air Base there to refuel aircraft.

Cyprus was also identified as a potential direction because of the British air base located on the island. Iran has additionally considered attacks on undersea fiber-optic cables running through the Strait of Hormuz.

The FT sources said that if the conflict enters a new phase of escalation, Tehran could extend its operations beyond the Middle East. In their assessment, Iran would be prepared to strike targets in Europe if the United States went too far.

Financial Times noted that Iran has previously attempted to reach distant targets. In February, the United States reported missile launches toward the Diego Garcia base in the Indian Ocean. In March, Turkey said it had intercepted Iranian ballistic missiles.

The newspaper also reported that relying on allied groups in Iraq, Lebanon and Yemen could be a more advantageous option for Tehran in its confrontation in the Middle East.
