Russian air defenses faced another massive wave of Ukrainian drones overnight on August 20, destroying 726 fixed-wing UAVs across a wide stretch of the country, according to the Russian Defense Ministry.
The drones were shot down over the Astrakhan, Belgorod, Bryansk, Volgograd, Voronezh, Kaluga, Kursk, Oryol, Rostov, Ryazan, Samara, Saratov, Tambov, Tula and Ulyanovsk regions. Air defense systems were also activated in the Moscow region, Krasnodar Territory, Crimea and Tatarstan.
The overnight assault followed another large-scale attack the previous day. Between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Moscow time on August 19, Russian forces intercepted and destroyed another 438 Ukrainian UAVs, the Defense Ministry said.
Those drones were downed over the Belgorod, Bryansk, Vologda, Kaluga, Kursk, Lipetsk, Oryol, Ryazan and Tula regions, as well as the Moscow region, Krasnodar Territory, Crimea and the Black Sea.
The Bryansk region came under one of the heaviest attacks. Acting Governor of the Bryansk Region Yegor Kovalchuk said 307 enemy fixed-wing drones were destroyed over the region in a 24-hour period.
The attacks were repelled by Russian Defense Ministry air defense units, mobile fire groups from the BARS-Bryansk brigade, mobile groups of the Bryansk transport police department and special units of the regional Rosgvardiya directorate.
The neighboring Kursk region also faced sustained attacks. Governor of the Kursk Region Alexander Khinshtein said 239 enemy drones of various types were shot down between 9 a.m. on August 19 and 9 a.m. on August 20.
Over the same period, evacuated areas of the region came under artillery fire 128 times. Another 18 attacks were carried out by drones using explosive devices.
Two people were injured. A 65-year-old man was wounded in the village of Maloye Soldatskoye in the Belovsky district, while a 74-year-old man was injured in the village of Karyzh in the Glushkovsky district.
The attacks also damaged homes, vehicles and other buildings. In Vishnevo in the Belovsky district, a garage and a car were damaged. In Maloye Soldatskoye, a house roof, a fence and a vehicle were hit. A residential building was damaged in Karyzh in the Glushkovsky district.
In the village of Shchekino in the Rylsky district, a feldsher-midwife station was damaged, while a building belonging to a closed school was hit in the village of Kuliga. A house in Nikipelovka in the Korenevsky district was destroyed.
In Kursk, the facades and windows of three private homes were damaged, along with an outbuilding. Five vehicles were damaged in the settlement of Kuibyshev in the Rylsky district.
No deaths were recorded, according to the governor of the Kursk region.
