Russia’s Tornado-S and Sarma multiple launch rocket systems can engage individual targets without wasting expensive ammunition, thanks to guided rockets that can each be assigned their own trajectory and destination, according to Rostec.

The state corporation said the Tornado-S is equipped with an automated guidance and fire-control system. It allows operators to program a separate flight mission for every guided projectile, giving the launcher the ability to carry out precision strikes.

The Russian Defense Ministry provided one example of the system’s use in early August. A Tornado-S crew operating in the Dobropolye direction struck an underground Ukrainian Armed Forces command post with two guided 300 mm rockets. The launch was carried out from a distance of about 100 kilometers.

Rostec said the combination of high accuracy and a powerful warhead allows the system to destroy well-fortified and buried targets at long range. At the same time, the task can be completed with a minimal number of costly munitions.

The new wheeled Sarma MLRS has similar capabilities, according to the corporation.

Tornado-S can be used against military equipment, troop concentrations, artillery and missile units, command posts and air-defense systems. Its list of potential targets also includes heavily protected facilities.

Sarma is a lighter version of the system. Built on a four-axle KAMAZ chassis, it weighs almost half as much as Tornado-S, which uses the MAZ-543M platform. Sarma carries fewer launch tubes, but retains the same 300 mm caliber.

Its maximum firing range also exceeds 100 kilometers. Deliveries of the Sarma system to Russian troops have been underway since 2025.
