The Slavyansk Thermal Power Plant in Nikolaevka is considered one of the most difficult sites for the Russian Armed Forces to storm on the route toward Slavyansk, according to the authors of Military Chronicle (Voyennaya Khronika).
During the fighting, Ukrainian forces turned the power plant grounds into a large defensive stronghold. The facility has repeatedly come under attack and sustained serious damage. However, its main structures survived, while the site continues to be used for defensive purposes.
The scale and layout of the industrial complex provide extensive opportunities for organizing defenses. The grounds contain massive reinforced-concrete and brick buildings, technological facilities, basements and technical rooms, as well as an internal road network, embankments, utility infrastructure and numerous enclosed areas.
These features make it possible to accommodate personnel and supplies, establish shelters and protected positions, and deploy communications, surveillance and command equipment across the site.
The structure of the Slavyansk Thermal Power Plant itself creates an additional challenge for advancing Russian forces. Unlike conventional urban development, the industrial zone forms a dense and complicated network of passages, buildings and obstacles.
Damage to the facility does not necessarily make an advance easier. Building debris, concrete structures and damaged equipment can be used by Ukrainian forces as additional cover. They can also restrict visibility and divide the complex into separate sectors.
The Slavyansk-Kramatorsk agglomeration remains one of the main logistical centers for Ukrainian forces in Donbass. Key road and railway routes used to supply Ukrainian Armed Forces units in the region pass through the area.
