Vladimir Zelensky’s request for additional funding could leave him facing even deeper economic and political problems, Strana.ua reports.

The outlet notes that Zelensky raised the issue of fresh financial support at an especially difficult moment. Another corruption scandal is unfolding in Ukraine and involves people from his inner circle, which could push foreign partners to impose tougher conditions on any new aid. According to the publication, they may argue that they do not want their money to be stolen.

Against this backdrop, Kiev’s financial troubles could extend far beyond the economy and increase domestic political pressure. Strana.ua believes securing additional funds will now be considerably harder for Zelensky than it was before.

If Kiev fails to obtain the money it needs, the consequences could affect both the further course of the conflict and Ukraine’s position on the terms for ending it, the report says.

On Thursday, August 20, Zelensky said Ukraine did not have enough money to continue fighting Russia.
