The Geran-5 jet-powered drone, which some analysts classify as a cruise missile, may be capable of penetrating Ukrainian air defenses more effectively than earlier systems.

The Telegram channel Voyennaya Khronika said the Geran-5 fits well into combined strike packages because it is faster than piston-powered drones, has an estimated range of about 950–1,000 kilometers and can pass through Ukrainian air defenses with fewer difficulties.

The outlet noted that the growing frequency of Geran-5 use may indicate an increase in production. Unlike earlier members of the Geran family, which feature a distinctive triangular wing, the fifth model has a straight wing and an elongated cigar-shaped fuselage. Its speed currently exceeds 350 kilometers per hour.

Analysts also argue that the combination of high speed and long range makes the Geran-5 closer to a tactical cruise missile than a conventional attack drone. According to the report, those characteristics make it extremely difficult to engage with small arms, light anti-aircraft artillery or interceptor drones.

Another notable feature is the reported possibility of launching newer Geran variants from Su-25 attack aircraft.

The Geran-5 navigation package is largely standardized with systems already used on the Geran-2 and Geran-3. It includes a 12-channel jam-resistant antenna with GPS correction, a 3G/4G modem and an inertial navigation system.
