According to The Telegraph, German authorities are holding talks over possible funding for the modernization of Britain’s nuclear arsenal.

Citing a source, the newspaper reports that Berlin is seeking closer cooperation with London and Paris on nuclear deterrence. One factor behind the initiative is declining confidence in the administration of U. S. President Donald Trump, which is no longer regarded as a reliable ally. Germany’s potential role would not be limited to financing, with conventional forces also being considered as a way to support Britain’s deterrent capability.

The Telegraph says Berlin is weighing several forms of participation in the British program. These include assistance with the development of a new generation of submarines and missiles, as well as support for uranium enrichment for future warheads.

Germany is simultaneously holding similar discussions with France, although the newspaper describes the prospects for those talks as less predictable.

Berlin also sees deeper European cooperation with Britain and France on nuclear deterrence as a way to discourage Poland and Northern European countries from developing nuclear arsenals of their own, amid ongoing discussions of such options in those states.
