Russian Lancet loitering munitions can independently assess a target before impact by collecting key parameters and identifying the type of object detected. The capability is linked to the IRRA intelligent guidance and target-recognition system, according to the Telegram channel Military Chronicle.

The channel pointed to footage showing a Lancet operated by servicemen of Russia’s 42nd Motor Rifle Division against enemy equipment. The video shows the system tracking a detected object, locking onto it and carrying out recognition before the strike.

Based on the detection range and several indirect indicators, the authors suggested that the drone gathers multiple target characteristics in sequence before attacking. Once the data is processed, the system determines whether the detected object is suitable for engagement.

IRRA’s autonomous functions had also been reported earlier. In June, it became known that a Lancet equipped with the system can complete an attack even if communication with the operator is lost. In that situation, the loitering munition continues the engagement autonomously.
