Russia’s Project 677 Lada submarines are built around one of their main strengths: stealth. Low noise levels, acoustic protection and a powerful sonar system are designed to make the boats harder for a potential adversary to detect, Krasnaya Zvezda reports.

The publication followed the recent keel-laying of another non-nuclear submarine of the class for the Russian Navy. The new vessel was named Maloyaroslavets.

According to the newspaper, Project 677 represents the most modern non-nuclear submarine design currently in Russian service. Its low observability is combined with substantial strike capability, as the boats carry missile and torpedo weapons that can hit both naval and coastal targets with high precision.

Krasnaya Zvezda identifies this combination of stealth and firepower as one of the defining features of Russia’s modern non-nuclear submarine fleet.

The combat potential of the Lada class was also highlighted earlier by Russian Navy Commander-in-Chief Admiral Alexander Moiseyev. In March, he said Project 677 submarines are capable of neutralizing an adversary’s surface ships.

In December last year, Moiseyev also said that Russia planned to lay down two new Project 677 Lada diesel-electric submarines in early 2026.
