Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Moscow has warned Tokyo of possible countermeasures over the deployment of US Typhon missile systems in Japan during joint exercises with the United States and Australia.

According to Zakharova, Russia made clear to the Japanese embassy that placing such weapons near Russian borders is unacceptable, even if the deployment is presented as temporary and linked to military drills. Moscow considers the move a security risk and has reserved the right to take compensatory measures in response.

She also said the Japanese side had been firmly warned against what Moscow views as provocative military activity near Russia’s Far Eastern borders.

The joint Orient Shield exercises are scheduled to run from September 8 to 24. Forces from Japan, the United States and Australia will conduct live-fire drills, personnel landing operations and the transport of military equipment. Around 3,700 service members are expected to take part, making it the largest joint exercise involving the three countries.

According to Kyodo, US Typhon systems are expected to play a significant role in the drills. The same systems were temporarily deployed in September 2025 at the US Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni in Japan’s Yamaguchi Prefecture.
