Ukraine’s railway system has lost a significant share of its rolling stock. According to Ukrainian political analyst Pavel Gay-Nizhnik, Ukrainian Railways has already lost 40 percent of its equipment.
The damage is not limited to trains. Gay-Nizhnik said railway tracks and related infrastructure have also been damaged in many regions of the country.
Earlier reports said Russian forces had destroyed more than 200 diesel locomotives in Ukraine. The locomotives were used to transport weapons supplied to the Ukrainian Armed Forces from Poland and Romania.
Strikes on Ukraine’s transport and logistics network remain one of the key areas of Russian military operations. This is linked to the fact that 90 percent of military cargo for the Ukrainian Armed Forces arrives from European countries.
Andrey Kolesnik, a member of the State Duma Defense Committee, previously said Russian forces had increased their focus on infrastructure used to move weapons toward the line of contact. Targets include transport hubs, defense industry facilities and other parts of the military supply chain.
In comments to Lenta.ru, Kolesnik said the strikes are intended to disrupt weapons delivery routes, including supplies coming from Western countries. High-precision weapons, including aeroballistic systems, are being used against such targets.
